Ammonium bicarbonate, also referred to as ammonium hydrogen carbonate, is a mildly basic inorganic compound whose chemical formula is (NH4)HCO3. It appears as a colourless, crystalline solid and gives off the odour of ammonia. This compound is soluble in water; however, it is insoluble in most organic solvents like ethanol, carbon disulphide and concentrated ammonia. In solution, it is volatile and can easily decompose into ammonia and carbon dioxide through an endothermic reaction. Moreover, it plays the role of a buffer in certain applications, including lyophilization and matrix-assisted laser desorption.
